Common bile duct is part of the “plumbing” that drains the secretion of the liver (bile) into small bowel (duodenum). The common bile duct is less than 1 mm long in neonates, 5 less than 2 to 3.5 mm in infants, 5, 13 less than 4 mm in older children, 5, 12 and less than 7 mm in adolescents and adults. Because of its ellipsoid shape the approximation for gallbladder volume can be estimated by using the formula of length x width x depth x.5cms.

Size of the common bile duct (cbd) is a predictor of biliary obstruction and, therefore, measurement is an important component of biliary system evaluation. 5 as measured sonographically, the internal diameter of the common hepatic duct has been found to be less than or equal to 2 mm long in infants, 3 mm in older. A new sonographic technique for demonstration of the common bile duct is described in a prospective study of 200 patients. In normal patients the mean width of the cbd increased from 2.8 mm in the age group 20 years or younger to 4.1 mm in patients 71 years of age or older.
